Traveling With Your Pet This Summer?

As you start to get back to vacations and beach weekends, trips might not be the same without the four-legged members of the family. Traveling with pets can be stressful for both you and your pets though if you’re not prepared.

If you’re planning to take a road trip with pets in tow, we’ve compiled some pet travel tips to ensure it’s a comfortable and safe experience for everyone.

Make sure your pet is microchipped.

This is one of the most crucial aspects of traveling with pets! Just as important, make sure the microchip information is up to date. If your pet is wearing an ID on their collar, also make sure their tag is up to date. 

Keep your pet secure in a well-ventilated, secure crate or carrier.

Make sure the crate is large enough for your pet to stand, sit, lie down, and turn around in. Secure the crate or carrier so it will not slide or shift if you have to make an abrupt stop. If you decide to forgo the crate or carrier, keep them in an auto travel harness.

Prep a pet travel kit.

Keep food, water, bowls, leashes, plastic bags, first aid supplies, medications and vaccine records together in a travel bag so everything is easily accessible. Also pack their favorite toys for them to have at your destination. Pack plenty of water, extra food, and avoid feeding your pet in a moving vehicle.

Never leave your pet unattended.

Of course you should never leave your pet in a car unattended even if the windows are down. Heat stroke can be deadly and happens in minutes! 

Locate an emergency vet near your destination.

Hopefully you will not need it, but being prepared with the address and phone number of a nearby emergency vet will be helpful in the event you do.
