Five Common Household Hazards for Cats

Many people may assume dogs are more likely to get into things at home than cats, but cats can be very curious and it’s important you’re mindful of potentially harmful aspects of your home.

Here are some household hazards to be aware of so you can ensure your home is the safest, healthiest environment for your cat.

  1. Keep chemicals and household toxins out of reach
This may seem like an obvious one, but cats are curious (and sometimes sneaky!) and may find their way into things you think are hard to reach. Some common household toxins to watch out for include:
    • All cleaning products
    • Antifreeze
    • Lawn and garden chemicals
    • Rodent poisons and insecticides
    • Salts used to melt snow and ice
    • Certain foods
    • Anti-inflammatory and cold/flu medications
    • Vitamins
  1. Look before you wash/dry
It may seem odd, but some cats like to hang out inside the washer or dryer. Keep your washer and dryer door closed and always look before you start your laundry.
  1. Keep wires out of reach
Many cats may think long wires are a toy, but this can be very hazardous. Playing with wires can cause cats to shock themselves or burn their mouths from chewing on them. Keep wires out of reach and if you can’t hide them, we suggest getting wire coverings. Also keep toys around so your cat has something else to play with!
  1. Don’t allow household objects to be used as toys
Things like string, rubberbands, and dental floss should never be allowed as a toy as these things can easily be swallowed and cause intestinal blockages.
  1. Be mindful of what plants you keep in the house
Cats may like to chew on plants, but some can be toxic. Eating anything other than their usual diet can cause gastrointestinal upset, but here are some specific plants to steer clear of having in the house:
    • Aloe Vera
    • Holly
    • Azaleas
    • Calla Lilies
    • Carnations
    • Pothos
    • Jade plants

… and many more! We also recommend researching the plant before you bring it into your home.
